USA World Cup History Part 1: USA vs Italy 1990 Full match
For us younger fans, we don't know what it was like when the Yanks really got started. I personally have never even seen the full matches from 1990, just painful highlights. I did some digging and found this one. So in preparation for this summer, we are going to try to do a little USA World Cup History 101. It really just shows how far we have come. Here is the full match of Italy vs. USA 1990. I would like to post some other full matches from previous World Cups as we approach South Africa 2010.
Great Moments in US Soccer Hair #6: Brian McBride
In this series, our friends at the Project 2010 blog look at some of the truly amazing heads of hair that have graced the field for the U.S. over the years…
Ah, the mid-90s...such a carefree time. MLS was in its infancy, we had a president that could play saxophone while wearing sunglasses, neo-hippies were pushing their way onto the nation's airwaves, and a young Brian McBride was scoring goals for the Columbus Crew.
Whether you call it "the curtain," "the gin blossom," or whatever else, Brian McBride's bob showed the world that he was a carefree dude (but maybe just a little edgy...in a safe sort of way), who was simply taking things as they came. It's funny, I'd almost completely forgotten about McBride's Abercrombie love child phase...or the shoelace-as-headband craze that swept through soccer fields across the Americas. Kids laced up their headbands when their bangs didn't even reach their eyebrows, and turned on the TV to watch the new domestic soccer league. What a glorious time.
It's been noticed that McBride's hair had a reverse-Samson effect (not to be confused with the reverse-Sampson effect often associated with Bruce Arena), in that his goal production and general quality of play increased when he ditched the long hair. While it was definitely a good move, it's a shame that McBride cut his hair before moving to England, or he might have made the list of Top 15 curtain hairstyles in Premier League history.
Did you know? Brian McBride's bob also acted as protective headgear. While his goals-per-game ratio rose when he clipped his hair, his head-injuries-per-90-minutes more than tripled.

Clint Dempsey is 19th best player in Premier League, according to Castrol Rankings
[From our pals at project-2010.net]Somebody tweeted this yesterday and I thought it was kind of interesting. (Thank you, Somebody.) The Castrol Rankings have have our very own Clint Dempsey listed as the 19th best player in the Prem. Just what are the Castrol Rankings, you ask? Well, here's what Castrol have to say:
"As an Official Sponsor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ we've developed a definitive system for rating the world's best players. The Castrol Index uses the latest technology to objectively analyse and rank player performance."
What is the "definitive system," exactly? I'm not really sure, but there's more info on their site. The point is that it's supposedly objective, and they've got Clint Dempsey at #19 in England, ahead of notable players like Benayoun, Kuyt, Reyna, Gerrard, Terry, and Tevez. Very interesting. See the full English rankings here.
The index covers leagues in England, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. You can filter the results by a number of criteria, including nationality. Since this is Project 2010, after all, I decided to see how they rank Americans across Europe. Their top five (in order): Dempsey, Friedel, Howard, Bradley, and Hahnemann. Not that surprising, I suppose. Bocanegra at 6th was interesting, but not shocking. See the full list here.
Will he be ready in time???
I am hopeful, but I am still not convinced he is a lock for World Cup spot as some people are claiming. We need to see him in action first. Still, it is absolutely amazing to see him running. What do ya'll think? More pics.
