Great Moments in US Soccer Hair #7: Kasey Keller

[from our friends at Project-2010.net]

In this series, we look at some of the truly amazing heads of hair that have graced the field for the U.S. over the years…

One of the first casualties of Friedel's Law, Kasey Keller is rightfully regarded as one of the greatest players the United States has ever produced. What many people forget is that this man, like all U.S. goalkeepers, once had a full head of hair. And what a head of hair it was.

It's almost as if Keller knew time was running out and decided that he needed to pack an entire lifetime of hirsute pursuits into his early 20s. The netminder headed over to Europe at an early age and succeeded in pulling off one of the trickier combos around--the bowl-mullet hybrid, known simply as the "bullet" to some. This is hard enough to pull off under normal circumstances, but throw in an already-receding hairline, and what you've got is a bona fide miracle of science. I've only seen the Bullet pulled off more successfully on one occasion, by a middle aged woman on a bus in Portland (must be some sort of Pacific Northwest connection), but that's a story for another time...

Did you know? Keller's position as spokesperson for the United States Egg Council is not due to his baldness, but rather growing up on an egg farm.

2010 FIFA World Cup 32 Teams, 1 Dream - USA

American fans used to be satisfied just to see the U.S. qualify for the FIFA World Cup. With players like Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard and Jozy Altidore headlining the squad, expectations have grown and anything less than a berth in the Round of 16 would be tough for fans to swallow.

ESPN gives USA 56% chance of advancing

[from our friends at Project-2010.net]

Nate Silver (of fivethirtyeight.com and baseball statistics fame) has just written an article for espn.com in which he crunches the numbers for World Cup Group C, and gives the USA a 56% chance of advancing (with a 22% chance of winning the group). We don't really know exactly what numbers he's crunching (other than the "Soccer Power Index" (which, by the way, have England at #3 in the world...a little optimistic, methinks), but it makes for an interesting read.
