Holden gets new contract with Bolton

American midfielder Stuart Holden has earned an extension to his contract with Bolton, just eight months after joining the English Premier League club. The 25-year-old United States international was already contracted until the end of the season but is now tied to Bolton until the end of the 2012-13 campaign. Holden initially joined Bolton in January on a short-term deal. A leg injury restricted him to just three appearances last season but he has started each of Bolton's six Premier League matches this season. Holden says the injury "made me more determined to make an impact when I came back for preseason.''

Eddie Johnson - A Fresh Start

US international striker Eddie Johnson, back in contention at Fulham this season, is seeking to repay the faith Manager Mark Hughes has shown in him by making his mark on the pitch in the months ahead. "I’m delighted to be getting my chance," Eddie told fulhamfc.com. "Mark Hughes has come in for Roy Hodgson, who did a really good job at the Club, and has really given me a chance to get my name back out there and show the fans and the Club my worth.

"I worked hard in pre-season to impress the Manager and I’ve been carrying that through on a day-to-day basis. With the injuries that have happened, to guys that are friends of mine on the Team, I’ve been given a chance. "I want to keep building up the minutes out there. This is the best League in the world that gets the most coverage and exposure so players always come and go. It’s a League where if you don’t take your chance you will be replaced in a couple of months.

"I’ve always had faith in my ability and I knew that when Mark Hughes came in as Manager it would be a fresh start for everyone. Even before the injuries I was always in the 20 players selected so I kept my head down and just kept working hard." Johnson has spent a fair amount of time out on loan in recent seasons and whilst his minutes on the pitch for Fulham have been limited over the past few years, his heart has clearly remained at the Cottage. "Fulham’s a very good Club and a family orientated Club. When you go out on loan like I did, and you’re away from the Team, you may not be there physically but your spirit is always with the Club."

Sunil Gulati is Not the Devil

By Matthew Carlson

By now, you have heard Sasha Victorine’s interview of Jurgen Klinsmann or read Grant Wahl’s follow-up interview during which Klinsman discussed his talks with the U.S. Soccer Federation about becoming coach of the USMNT. The statements made by Klinsmann have opened old wounds for many USMNT fans who have in turn unleashed a torrent of vitriol directed at USSF President Sunil Gulati. After reading the angry comments posted all over the internet, I wondered whether Gulati actually deserved all of the hate he was getting. The conclusion I have come to is “no.”

I think it is best for me to start by disclosing my biases. I am just a USMNT fan. I do not know Sunil Gulati and I have no inside access to the USSF. I am not a rabid Bob Bradley hater. I have questioned Bob Bradley’s tactics and in-game personnel decisions, but also think he has done some very good things as USMNT coach. Also, I support bringing in a foreign coach as a short term strategy for the USMNT. With regard to Klinsmann in particular, I am not as convinced as some are. There seems to be just as much evidence to support the conclusion that he is a good coach as there is to support the position that he is not. To me, Klinsmann appears to be more of a big picture guy, rather than a sideline guy and he may be a better fit -- and could be the most benefit -- in a player development role, rather than, as the USMNT coach. So with my biases being disclosed, let’s take a look at some of the more popular criticisms leveled at Mr. Gulati in the aftermath of the Klinsmann interview.

Demerit to Whitecaps?

The Vancouver Whitecaps have emerged as a contender for U.S. national team defender Jay DeMerit, a starter at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Rumours continue to circulate of a DeMerit move to German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, and there are unsourced reports of interest from English Premier League side Everton. But The Province has learned that the Whitecaps, set to jump to Major League Soccer in March, have been in productive talks with DeMerit and are now trying to find common ground with MLS.

Klinsmann says he ended U.S. job talks

Get Microsoft Silverlight
Juergen Klinsmann emerged from his extended vacation recently to discussa variety of topics with Kansas City Wizards television analyst Sasha Victorine and revealed that U.S. Soccer's unwillingness to give him full control of the national team in writing ultimately led to the end of discussions about him possibly taking over as U.S. national team head coach. “We had conversations maybe about three or four weeks period of time, and very positive conversations, but we didn’t get it to a positive ending because we couldn’t put into writing what we agreed to verbally."

Klinsmann confirmed a report from ESPN last month that revealed that Klinsmann had met with U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati to discuss the U.S. head coach position before U.S. Soccer gave head coach Bob Bradley a contract extension. Gulati refused to discuss or acknowledge any talks with any other candidates when asked after Bradley's re-signing.

Klinsmann stated that it came down to wanting complete control of the national team and not being able to get such control agreed to in writing.“It’s obviously always about authority. When you have conversations with a club team or a national team it’s who has the last word in what issues, and that’s why we couldn’t get into the written terms," Klinsmann said.

"Verbally we agreed on that the technical side is my side, and I should have a hundred percent control of it. In written terms, they couldn’t commit to it, and at that point I said well, I can’t get the job done because I have to have the last say as a head coach for my entire staff, for all the players issues, for everything that happens with the team. "Unfortunately they couldn’t commit to that and that was basically the end of our talks, and then they agreed then to continue with Bob as the head coach and that’s totally fine."
