It's Time To Bury The Hatchet.

Photo:  AP
By:  Matt Carlson
As you may know, “burying the hatchet” means to make peace with someone.  The phrase arose from a tradition followed by several tribes of indigenous people in North America, most notably the Iroquois, Mohawk and Shawnee, who would bury a hatchet in the ground when entering a peace treaty.  To some tribes, burying the hatchet was not meant as a surrender, rather, it was merely a signal that the hostilities had ended.  In the wake of his appointment as manager of Egypt, I think it is time for some U.S. fans to bury the hatchet when it comes to Bob Bradley.

On Jurgen and expectations

By Jared Launius

It's always important, I think, to point out the rather inescapable fact I don't really know anything. This is something one of my writing models, Joe Posnanski, likes to often remind his readers, and it's a plan I think is worth shadowing. Because really, I don't know anything. I'd like to think I know things, but I really just, for the most part, have things I think.

Sure, there are some things I know. I know Jurgen Klinsmann is the coach of the U.S. Men's National Team, for example. I know he wants to play a more creative, expressive style than his predecessors. I know he wants to change the culture of youth soccer in this country. I know he's off to a 0-2-1 start in friendlies against Mexico, Costa Rica and Belgium. There are other things I know, too, like the fact the U.S.'s colors are red white and blue and that we have 50 states, but not a whole lot else relevant to this discussion.

I do think, though, we're having a hard time wrapping our Yankee brains around exactly what is going to happen under Jurgen Klinsmann. Or, perhaps more accurately, what we think should happen under Jurgen Klinsmann.

What to watch for this weekend

By Jared Launius

Happy weekend, everyone. Here's some of what I'll be watching for from Yanks abroad this weekend.

England
Clint Dempsey and Fulham have stumbled out the Premier League gates, failing to get the full three points out of any of their first four matches. It's going to take a near perfect showing to end that run this weekend, as Manchester City, owner of the maximum 12 points and a +12 goal differential, brings its suddenly forceful attack to Craven Cottage. Both sides played midweek fixtures in European competition – City drew Napoli 1-1 in Manchester and Fulham produced a 1-1 effort of its own at home against Dutch club Twente. Can Dempsey play hero at home against the league leaders?

Elsewhere, Stuart Holden is nearing his return to the Bolton lineup after spending the last five months recovering from a nasty knee injury. Could he dress this weekend?
