2011 USMNT report cards, part 3

By Jared Launius

Not a moment too early, allow me to share the rest of my 2011 grades of every player to earn a senior cap for the U.S. men's senior team this year. Links to lists one and two, featuring players whose last names start with the letters A-L, can be found at the end of the post.

Dax McCarty: B- – one cap, one start – After an impressive outing for the U.S. against Chile in January, it seemed possible the clever central midfielder might steal his way into Bob Bradley's midfield pecking order. McCarty, however, struggled to adapt to life in a new midfield for DC United after moving from FC Dallas and was ultimately shipped to New York for Dwayne DeRosario midseason. It was a transitional year for McCarty – not a bad one, mind you, just one full of change and stagnant play. But hey, remember this?

Jones under investigation for intentional stomp -- video included

American midfielder Jermaine Jones is under investigation by the German soccer federation for apparently intentionally stepping on an opponent's injured foot. Television replays showed the Schalke player stepping Borussia Moenchengladbach star Marco Reus's left foot during a break in the German Cup match Wednesday. Reus is playing with a specially designed shoe because of a broken toe, but still scored twice in Moenchengladbach's 3-1 victory. The incident was not noticed by the referee. Jones was ejected late in the match in an unrelated incident.

Donovan signs on for 2 month loan at Everton

Landon Donovan is headed back to Merseyside. The LA Galaxy announced on Thursday that the MLS superstar will join Everton on a two-month loan beginning on Jan. 1, reuniting him with the EPL club he represented during a similar loan two years ago. Donovan appeared in 13 games for Everton in 2010, scoring two goals and drawing rave reviews on his first shot at playing in the English Premier League. He used that loan largely to stay fit ahead of the World Cup in South Africa, and this time he’s eager to return to the club and reunite with his former teammates.

2011 USMNT report cards, part 2

By Jared Launius

Well hello.

If you missed part one of my silly attempt to recap the year for the USMNT, there's a link at the bottom of the page (That, friends, is what we call a tease. Journalism schooling at work!). Here's a quick recap – I'm giving a grade, A-F, to all 47 players to earn a cap for the U.S. men's senior team this year. Taken into account is both their club play as well as how they performed in their time wearing a U.S. shirt. For simplicity's sake, I'm going in alphabetical order. Last week, I did A-C (a surprisingly high 16 players' last name start with one of those three letters), so we'll start with D and roll on to L today.

Is this particularly sophisticated? No. Is it fun? For me, at least, yes. So yeah, onward, ho!

Rudy Gestede the newest Yank Abroad?

Empire of Soccer had this article about a possible new Yank Abroad. Not even sure if he is eligible though. Can anyone speak to that?

"Gestede is a product of the Metz system in his native France, where he developed his skill en route to featuring 17 times for the French U-19 side. His grandfather, an American from Atlanta, Georgia, is his ticket to pursuing his ambitious American target. He currently plies his trade with the Bluebirds, where both coach Malky Mackay as well as assistant coach David Kerslake – who played alongside Jurgen Klinsmann during his Tottenham days – are encouraging and assisting Gestede to get on the U.S. radar."
